ICAR-CIARI and ICAR-KVK, South Andaman, jointly organises training programme on pig farming at ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sippighat

A training programme was organized by ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair at ICAR-KVK, Sippighat (South Andaman) from 18-20 Aug., 2026 in collaboration with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kenda, South Andaman. The theme of the trainings was “Information and awareness on scientific pig rearing practices” and 25 participants attended the training.

The Chief Guest, Dr Y. Ramakrishna, PS & Head, KVK, South Andaman, presided the session and he was very instrumental in briefing the ways and means for profitable pig rearing. 

At the outset, an ice-breaking and sensitization session was conducted to familiarize the participants with the prevailing situation and key challenges faced by the piggery industry in the islands, along with possible solutions. The session also covered the feeding system, feeding schedule, and concept of balanced feeding for swine.

The training further focused on reproductive management of swine for profitable pig farming, breeding and genetic selection strategies, and the benefits of superior germplasm. Participants were also sensitized to various financial and welfare schemes available to farmers, including the Kisan Credit Card. The integration of piggery with the Integrated Farming System (IFS) model, its major components, and strategies for implementation in the islands were also discussed.

As part of the practical exposure, participants visited the Piggery Unit of DAHVS, Dollygung. The functioning of the unit and various practices related to fodder management, Azolla cultivation, fodder chaffing, and hydroponic systems were demonstrated. The participants were also familiarized with routine management practices, iron therapy for piglets, piglet selection, docking, and needle tooth removal.

The training concluded with a discussion on the efficient utilization of locally available resources and strategies to address feed scarcity in the islands, with the objective of enhancing profitability and sustainability in livestock farming.
