Ranching-cum-Mass Awareness Programme organized at Kumbh Mela, Sangam, Allahabad

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute organized the Ranching-cum-Mass Awareness Programme at Kumbh Mela, Sangam, Allahabad today.

Shri Prashanna Kumar Patshani, Member of Parliament and Chairperson of Parliamentary Committee on Official Language briefed the mandate of the Namami Gange Project in the contextual facts and circumstances that the river Ganga is facing threat like industrial and sewage effluents, abstraction in flow of water through constructions of dam and barrages, pollutant discharge, damage of basin that is affecting the ecosystem’s health and loss of biodiversity. He expressed deep concerns for restoring the availability of indigenous fish in the entire stretch of river Ganga through the technology and policy initiatives.

He also inaugurated the releasing of 15,000 wild stock advance fingerling of the Indian Major Carp at the point of Sangam Nose, Prayagraj. He also appreciated the noble cause of the Mission Namami Gange.

Dr. Praveen, ADG (Inland Fisheries) urged on conducting the ranching programme in the entire stretch of river Ganga.

Earlier, Dr. R.S. Shrivastava, Head, ICAR-CIFRI, Allahabad Centre welcomed the dignitaries. He also underlined the CIFRI’s role in conserving and restoring the biodiversity and fish diversity of river Ganga and ensuring the livelihood of the fishers.

Dr. B.K. Das, Director, CIFRI, Barrakpore highlighted the ranching programme’s objectives and the target to release one crore wild stock seed during this year.

The Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language, Officials of the State Department of Fisheries; Government of U.P.; Director, NMCG, U.P. Region; representative of NMCG, New Delhi, scientists of ICAR-CIFRI, Allahabad and various other dignitaries were also present during the occasion.
