The ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai celebrated the World Environment Day today.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Smt. C. Suvarna, I.F.S., Commissioner of Fisheries, Government of Telangana presented a talk on “Biodiversity and Natural Resources Management” on this year’s World Environment Day’s theme “Biodiversity”. Dr. Suvarna made a presentation on Indian Biodiversity’s richness, anthropogenic activity’s impact, such as, industrial and domestic waste disposal on the pollution of natural resources, water and soil. Accentuating the undesired effect of introduction of foreign species and destructive impact on natural resources, she also stressed on the need for better understanding about the species to be introduced.
Dr. K.K. Vijayan, Director, ICAR-CIBA opined the necessity of keeping environmental balancing between food production activities and sustainable use of natural resources that will be possible only by the departmental collaboration of various agencies involved in ecosystem services. Dr. Vijayan stressed on developing sustainable aquaculture in the un-used brackishwater resources for the production of food and livelihood as the saline waters are not usable for any agricultural purpose, drinking or construction.
