CIFA Celebrated National Fish Farmers’ Day

9th July 2013, Bhubaneswar

The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, a constituent of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India today observed National Fish Farmers day at its Kausalyaganga campus.

Shri R.S. Gopalan, I.A.S. Director, Agriculture and Food Production, Govt. of Odisha           graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Shri Bibhu Prasad Kar, AGM, NABARD also graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. 

Way back in 1957 on 10th July two scientists Dr. K.H. Alikunhi and Dr. H.L. Chaudhury invented induced breeding technology. This is hailed as a land mark achievement in the history of fishery.  Today India is the second largest fish producer in the world (5.43 % share) and the second largest in freshwater fish production, informed

Seventeen fish farmers from different parts of India were felicitated and four publications in different languages were released on this occasion.   The awardee farmers also made brief presentations of their way of farming fish and shared their stories with the participating researchers and other farmers. A total of 150 farmers and farm women attended the farmers’ meet held on the sidelines of the celebrations.

A scientist-farmer interaction was held on this occasion which was moderated by Dr. S.C. Rath, Senior Scientist. The function was coordinated by Dr. B.K. Das, Principal Scientist, Fish Health Management Division.

Dr. A.K. Sahu, Head, Aquaculture Production and Environment Division proposed the vote of thanks on the occasion.
