A five-day training program on “Scientific Livestock Management for Enhanced Productivity and Profitability” is currently underway at ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek, for 20 farmers from Meluri district. Scheduled from 15 to 19 September 2025, the program aims to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills in scientific livestock rearing, with a special focus on Mithun, the pride and state animal of Nagaland.
The training blends lectures, interactive discussions, hands-on demonstrations, and field visits. On the first day, participants learned about NRCM technologies and Mithun promotion programs, government schemes for farmers, semi-intensive Mithun rearing practices, scientific pig management, and microbial diseases affecting Mithun.

Over the next few days, the program will dive into practical aspects such as Mithun handling and identification, record keeping in breeding, reproductive and feeding management, and the role of artificial insemination in improving productivity.
Sessions will also cover metabolic and parasitic diseases, as well as entrepreneurial opportunities in Mithun farming. Farmers will gain practical exposure through demonstrations on value addition in Mithun meat and milk products and field visits to ICAR Nagaland Centre farms and the Mithun Conservation Unit at Khonoma village.
By the end of the program, participants are expected to be better equipped with scientific know-how and practical skills to adopt improved livestock practices that can enhance productivity, profitability, and livelihood security.
