The programme was attended by Chief Captain Lionald Nicomed; Tribal Council Secretary Martin Luther; Deputy Chief John Levi; Tamaloo Captain Paul Benjamin; Tapoiming Captain Lawrence Mathew; and Perka Captain Paul David. The herbal ointment was developed by a team under the Department of Science and Technology (DST)-supported project titled “Promotion of Socioeconomic Status and Self-Employment of Nicobarese Tribes through Scientific Validation of Ethno-Veterinary Tribal Medicinal Knowledge and Herbal Product Development.” The ointment is a scientifically validated herbal formulation intended to support wound healing in livestock and pet animals.

During interactions with the Nicobarese community, the importance of proper livestock healthcare in safeguarding both animal and human health was emphasised. The launch of the product during Reform Utsav 2026 highlights the potential of scientifically validated traditional knowledge and herbal formulations to promote sustainable livestock health management, particularly in remote island communities such as Car Nicobar.
She further informed the participants that a series of participatory skill-development programmes is being organised for tribal healers to facilitate the advancement of traditional ethno-veterinary oil formulations into ointments.
These initiatives aim to strengthen local capacities, preserve indigenous medicinal knowledge and create opportunities for self-employment among the Nicobarese community.
A total of 40 tribal representatives participated in the programme, highlighting the importance of community engagement in promoting indigenous knowledge-based innovations and sustainable livestock healthcare in the Nicobar Islands.
