ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Kolkata Centre, organised a Kisan Goshti-cum-Awareness Programme under Khet Bachao Abhiyan at Bada, Barasat-II, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, on 4 November 2026. The programme focused on promoting the balanced and judicious use of inputs in aquaculture, particularly in the region's waterbody-dominated areas where fish farming is a major source of livelihood.

During the interactive session, fish farmers were sensitised to the balanced use of organic manures and chemical fertilisers, soil-test-based nutrient management, water quality assessment and appropriate application of liming materials during pond preparation and culture operations. Emphasis was also laid on demand-based feeding and the preparation of cost-effective, high-quality farm-made fish feed using locally available ingredients to reduce production costs.
Other key topics included scientific pond preparation, integrated farming, fish processing, soil conservation, organic and natural farming, and the judicious use of biopesticides and chemical pesticides. A hands-on demonstration was conducted using CIFE aquaculture test kits to assess pond water pH. Farmers were also guided on the appropriate dosage and application of lime based on water quality parameters.

The participating farmers actively shared their experiences, existing aquaculture practices and field-level challenges. The discussions encouraged them to adopt scientific aquaculture practices and responsible input management to conserve soil and water resources while improving farm productivity.
A total of 44 farmers engaged in agriculture and aquaculture participated in the programme, reinforcing the importance of farmer–scientist interaction in promoting sustainable fisheries and farming practices under Khet Bachao Abhiyan.
