ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi, has developed ‘MatsyaMetri’, a smartphone application that enables measurement of the length and width of fish without physically handling them.
The application has been developed under a project focused on the automated measurement of aquatic resources and generation of standardised length-frequency data for fisheries stock assessment. MatsyaMetri uses an intelligent, image-based measurement tool that allows users to capture images of fish and estimate their dimensions. The measurements are automatically recorded and compiled into length-frequency datasets, which can support fisheries population analysis, stock assessment and resource monitoring.

According to Dr Grinson George, Director, ICAR-CMFRI, the application simplifies the collection of biological data by automatically recording measurements and generating length-frequency datasets. Designed for fisheries scientists, researchers and field survey teams, MatsyaMetri enables rapid and systematic collection of biological data to support fisheries assessment and management.
The application allows multiple individuals of the same fish species or aquatic resource to be measured within a single sampling session. Upon completion of the measurements, the system automatically generates length-frequency distributions using appropriate class intervals. The recorded measurements, along with the corresponding photographs, can be saved with the sampling session and subsequently exported as a CSV file for further scientific analysis.
Senior Scientist, ICAR-CMFRI and ICAR-National Fellow, developed the application, said that MatsyaMetri is aimed at simplifying biological data collection during field surveys and enabling more systematic generation of fisheries data for scientific assessment and resource monitoring.

MatsyaMetri is designed for ARCore-supported Android devices. Following registration and login, users can create a sampling session, point the smartphone camera towards a flat surface and place the fish within the camera view. The application detects the surface and provides an on-screen measuring guide to estimate the length and width of the fish.
The project is supported by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Government of India, through the ICAR-National Fellow Project.
