5 November 2026, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh

ICAR–Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur, organised a programme under the Khet Bachao Abhiyaan, alongside the observance of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2026 and distribution of critical agricultural inputs, at Khukkham locality, a tribal-dominated village in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh. The programme was conducted under the Institute's Farmer FIRST Programme (FFP).

During the interaction with farmers, emphasis was laid on balanced nutrient management, compost preparation, organic and natural farming practices, and Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) for improving soil health and crop productivity. The participants were sensitised to the 4Rs of Nutrient Stewardship—Right Source, Right Dose, Right Time and Right Method—and the judicious use of organic manures and chemical fertilisers.

The programme also highlighted the importance of groundwater recharge and water conservation at the farm level. Farmers were informed about suitable measures, including rainwater harvesting, field bunding, farm ponds and recharge pits, to enhance rainwater infiltration, minimise surface runoff and improve groundwater availability for sustainable agricultural production.

On the occasion of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2026, the participants were sensitised to the life, contributions and legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, particularly his role in safeguarding tribal rights, preserving tribal identity and promoting self-reliance and social justice. Discussions also focused on girl child education, greater participation of women and rural youth in agriculture, and equal opportunities in agricultural development. The importance of conserving soil, forests and water resources through community participation and sustainable natural resource management was also emphasised for the well-being of tribal communities and future generations.

As part of the programme, seeds of improved wheat varieties HDCSW 18 and GW 322 were distributed among farmers as critical agricultural inputs under FFP to encourage the adoption of improved varieties and enhance wheat productivity.

The programme highlighted the importance of integrating sustainable agricultural practices, soil and water conservation, balanced nutrient management and community empowerment to strengthen agricultural productivity and livelihood security in tribal areas.

A total of 64 farmers, including 34 women farmers, participated in the programme.
