UAS Mandya and ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad Join hands to Promote Millets Technologies to Scheduled Caste Farmers

A Scientist -farmers Interface meeting on millets production technologies, processing, and value addition was successfully organized today for Scheduled Caste beneficiary farmers at ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, University of Agricultural Sciences, Mandya.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. K.M. Harini Kumar, Special Officer, UAS Mandya while he also shared his experiences in millets cultivation & usage, motivated farmers to utilize the technologies of university for agricultural development.

The event was jointly organized by ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project on Sorghum & Millets, UAS, Mandya, Karnataka, ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad, under the SCSP component of AICRP-Sorghum & Millets.

The main purpose of the workshop was to promote entrepreneurship development among scheduled caste farmers through millet cultivation, processing, value addition and marketing, thereby enhancing livelihood opportunities. The program also encouraged collective action through FPOs for better access to markets and value chain integration.

The experts informed about the importance of millets in climate change scenario to address malnutrition.

The technical sessions included were millet production technologies, role of Farmer Producer Companies in millet value chains development, Millet processing and value addition, importance of millets for nutritional and economic security, Millet marketing strategies and success stories on millet farming, processing and value addition. A Kannada publication on Millets Production and Processing was released in the meeting.

Over 100 farmers, scientists, extension officials, and stakeholders actively participated. As part of the SCSP initiative, quality millet seeds, farm implements, and tarpaulins were distributed to 50 Scheduled Caste farmers under Global CoE, ICAR-IIMR Hyderabad.

The event concluded with farmers expressing gratitude for the support extended under SCSP program of ICAR-IIMR, and showing keen interest in adopting millet-based farming, processing, and marketing for entrepreneurship development.
