DG, ICAR Calls for Expanding Millet Technologies and Value Chains during Visit to ICAR–IIMR, Hyderabad; Reviews Progress of Global Centre of Excellence on Millets

8 March 2026, Hyderabad

Reinforcing the national commitment to promoting millets as climate-resilient and nutrition-rich crops, Dr M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE & Director General, ICAR, visited the ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad today.

During the visit, Dr Jat interacted with the Director, scientists and staff of the institute and was briefed on its key research programmes. These initiatives focus on millet crop improvement, development of climate-resilient production technologies, strengthening seed systems, post-harvest management, value addition and promotion of millet-based enterprises. The discussions highlighted ICAR–IIMR’s efforts in promoting millets as “Shree Anna”, contributing to nutritional security, sustainable agriculture and enhanced livelihood opportunities for farmers.

Dr Jat also visited the Global Centre of Excellence on Millets (Shree Anna) (GCoE) at ICAR–IIMR, where he reviewed the progress of the advanced facilities and initiatives aimed at strengthening global collaboration, capacity building and dissemination of millet technologies. The centre is expected to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India.

In his interaction with the scientific community, Dr Jat appreciated the institute’s contributions in advancing millet research and promoting millet-based innovations at both national and international levels. He emphasized the need to intensify research on climate-resilient millet varieties, improved agronomic practices and modern processing technologies to enhance the value and market potential of millet-based products.

He further advised strengthening outreach and scaling up millet technologies through closer collaboration with state governments, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and other stakeholders to expand millet value chains, promote millet-based entrepreneurship and enhance farmers’ income.
