13 November 2025, Lahaul–Spiti
Under the ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada 2025’, the ICAR–Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute, North Temperate Regional Station, Garsa organized a Tribal Agri-Entrepreneurship Meeting in Tingrat village, Lahaul–Spiti. The programme drew participation from 60 villagers, including both men and women, with a focus on strengthening rural entrepreneurship, promoting value addition, and supporting sustainable livelihoods among tribal communities. The event served as a platform to connect farmers, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and agribusiness startups to explore new opportunities for enterprise development.
The meeting enabled scientists and technical experts to interact with progressive farmers, women SHG members, and local entrepreneurs. The discussions centered on identifying potential avenues for agro-based entrepreneurship and improving market linkages for tribal produce.
A major highlight was the interaction with the ‘KangLa Ladies’, a dynamic women-led SHG from Tingrat village headed by Ms. Rigzin. The group is engaged in producing a diverse range of value-added products from local resources such as sea buckthorn and wild roses including jams, juices, dried powders, herbal tea leaves, and rose-based items. The NTRS team visited their processing unit and praised their innovative use of native plants for income generation.

To boost the group’s market reach and business expansion, NTRS facilitated a new linkage between the SHG and Mr. Vinod, owner of TOSH Products, Kullu, a known buyer of herbal and fruit-based products from Lahaul. This partnership is expected to advance product standardization, enhance branding, and create sustainable market channels beyond the local region.
In addition, a livestock health camp was organized for the community. Sheep and goats were screened for general health and parasitic infections, symptomatic cases were treated, and faecal and blood samples were collected for further diagnostic testing. The initiative aims to monitor disease prevalence and support improved herd health management.
The programme marked a meaningful step toward empowering tribal communities through entrepreneurship, value addition, and strengthened livestock health services.
