IARI-Assam Takes Over RRLRRS, Gerua from CRRI-Cuttack

ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Assam has formally taken over the Regional Rainfed Lowland Rice Research Station (RRLRRS), Gerua, Kamrup from the ICAR-Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack.

The handover ceremony was graced by Dr. Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director and Vice-Chancellor, ICAR-IARI.

On the occasion, Dr. Kanchan Saikia, In-Charge Head, RRLRRS, Gerua, formally handed over the station to Dr. L.K. Baishya, In-Charge, ICAR-IARI-Assam, symbolizing the transfer of responsibilities and the beginning of new opportunities for farmers in the region.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Rao underlined the immense potential for agricultural innovation in the Northeast. He emphasized that the takeover would accelerate research in rice, horticultural crops, and integrated farming systems tailored to the unique agro-climatic conditions of the region.

To mark the occasion, ICAR-IARI-Assam organized an Interaction and Awareness-cum-Training Programme on “Recent Advances in Rice-based Integrated Farming Systems.’ The programme witnessed the active participation of around 100 farmers from Nalbari, Baksa, and Kamrup districts.

The experts highlighted the importance of scientific paddy cultivation, crop diversification, and sustainable resource management in improving the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers.

The event marked a significant step in ICAR-IARI-Assam’s commitment to farmer empowerment, sustainable agriculture, and food security in the Northeast.
