Reinforcing its commitment to excellence in scientific research and laboratory quality assurance, the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, in collaboration with the National Board for Quality Promotion (NBQP), a constituent body of the Quality Council of India (QCI), organised an awareness programme today under the Gunvatta Yatra initiative today. The programme was aimed at promoting a culture of quality in laboratory practices, strengthening technical competence, and creating awareness about nationally recognized laboratory accreditation frameworks, thereby advancing the institute's pursuit of globally benchmarked standards in research and laboratory services.

In his inaugural address, Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, underscored the critical importance of maintaining the highest standards in laboratory analysis to ensure the credibility, reliability, and wider acceptance of scientific outputs in accordance with globally benchmarked quality standards. He emphasized that robust quality assurance practices are indispensable for research institutions aspiring for excellence, innovation, and international recognition. He further envisioned that strengthening laboratory quality systems and achieving globally accepted accreditation would not only enhance the institute's scientific credibility but also position ICAR-CIFRI as a centre of excellence capable of delivering research outcomes that inspire confidence among stakeholders and contribute to sustainable fisheries development.

The programme featured Mr. K. Siri Babu, Assistant Director, NABL, along with other members of NBQP, as resource persons. They shared valuable insights on strengthening laboratory quality management systems, enhancing technical competence, and understanding the framework for National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accreditation.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from Heads of Divisions, Principal Scientists, Senior Scientists, Scientists, Technical Officers, and Technicians of the institute. During the technical sessions, the resource persons provided an overview of the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard for testing and calibration laboratories and explained the online application process for obtaining NABL accreditation for laboratory activities.

The interactive sessions encouraged active participation, with attendees engaging in discussions and seeking clarifications on various aspects of laboratory accreditation and quality management.

Participants appreciated the practical guidance provided during the programme and expressed that the deliberations had significantly enhanced their understanding of laboratory quality systems and the NABL accreditation process.

The awareness programme marked another significant step towards fostering a culture of quality, technical competence, and continuous improvement at ICAR-CIFRI, supporting the institute's pursuit of excellence in fisheries research and laboratory practices.
