ICAR–Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune, successfully organized a one-day workshop on World Intellectual Property (IP) Day 2026 in hybrid mode today aligning with the global theme “IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate.” The event aimed to create awareness about the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and their relevance in research and innovation, particularly in the floriculture sector.
The event focused on sensitizing researchers, students, and stakeholders about different forms of intellectual property protection, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and protection of plant varieties.

Addressing the gathering, Dr K. V. Prasad, Director, ICAR-DFR, highlighted the growing importance of IPRs in flower crops and shared insights into challenges faced by the floriculture industry. He emphasized the urgent need for greater awareness, especially regarding Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FRA) and patent filing for innovations in the sector.
The technical session featured an engaging workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights in Floriculture,” where insights from extensive experience in the IPR domain were shared. The session provided participants with valuable knowledge on legal protection mechanisms and innovations in the botanical sector.

The workshop included practical demonstrations on documentation for filing different IP applications, online filing platforms, and patent searching, offering participants hands-on exposure.
Participants actively interacted with the expert, clarifying doubts and gaining practical understanding of IP filing processes. More than 30 participants attended the workshop and benefitted from the deliberations.
