Under the nationwide ‘Intensive Campaign on Balanced Use of Fertilisers’ initiated by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, scientists from the ICAR-Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune, have begun a series of farmer awareness programmes across selected villages in Pune district. As part of the campaign, a team of scientists conducted an outreach programme in Nirgudi village of Haveli tehsil today where farmers were sensitised on the importance of balanced fertiliser application and sustainable agricultural practices for improving soil health. The programme emphasised the adoption of soil test–based fertiliser recommendations to enhance soil fertility and ensure efficient nutrient management.

During the visit, Soil Health Cards were distributed to farmers, enabling them to make informed decisions on nutrient application based on scientific analysis. The expert team highlighted the adverse effects of excessive and imbalanced fertiliser use. Farmers were encouraged to adopt integrated nutrient management practices, including the use of bio-inputs and recycling of organic resources, to ensure long-term sustainability of farming systems.

ICAR-DFR plans to expand the campaign across Haveli, Maval, and Junnar tehsils in the coming weeks. The initiative aims to create widespread awareness among farmers ahead of the upcoming Kharif season and promote environmentally sustainable as well as economically viable agricultural practices. This campaign represents a significant step towards improving soil health and strengthening sustainable agricultural development in Pune district.
