A three-day workshop on “Biosafety and Bioethics for Excellence in Modern Entomological Research” was inaugurated today at the NRL Auditorium, ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. The workshop is being organized by the Division of Entomology, ICAR-IARI, to promote awareness and strengthen capacity in biosafety, biosecurity and ethical practices in contemporary entomological research.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director, ICAR-IARI, as the Chief Guest, in the presence of Dr C. Viswanathan, Joint Director (Research), and Dr Anupama Singh, Dean & Joint Director (Education), ICAR-IARI, along with distinguished scientists, experts, course directors, research scholars and participants.
In his inaugural address, Dr Srinivasa Rao highlighted the significance of biosafety and bioethics for students and young researchers engaged in modern scientific research. He encouraged the participants to disseminate the knowledge gained during the workshop by delivering lectures at their respective institutions and colleges, thereby promoting wider awareness of responsible biosafety and bioethical practices.
The workshop aims to build awareness and capacity in biosafety, biosecurity, bioethics, laboratory safety, risk assessment and responsible conduct of research in the rapidly evolving field of entomology. With modern research increasingly incorporating molecular biology, RNA interference, CRISPR-based genome editing, insect transgenesis, synthetic biology, microbial biocontrol and insect cell culture, the programme underscores the importance of undertaking scientific innovation in a safe, ethical and environmentally responsible manner.
The three-day programme features expert lectures, practical demonstrations and laboratory-oriented activities covering biosafety regulations; BSL/IBSL facilities; safe handling of biological materials; genetically modified organisms; insect pathogens and microorganisms; hazardous chemicals; laboratory waste management; emergency preparedness; environmental safety; research integrity; publication ethics; and responsible research practices.
A total of 31 participants, comprising early-career scientists, research scholars, and technical and research staff, are participating in the workshop.
