ICAR-National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Microorganisms, Mau, celebrated International Microorganism Day (IMD) 2026 today to highlight the significance of microorganisms and promote scientific curiosity and interest in microbiology among young learners.
International Microorganism Day is observed annually on 17 September to recognise the significant contributions of microorganisms to human health, food and agriculture, the environment, biotechnology and scientific research. The day commemorates the pioneering work of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, who, on 17 September 1683, reported his observations of microorganisms in a letter to the Royal Society of London.
The activities were designed to foster scientific curiosity, creativity and innovation among students while enhancing their understanding of the diverse and beneficial roles of microorganisms in agriculture, human health, food, biotechnology and environmental sustainability.
Dr Alok Kumar Srivastava, Director, ICAR-NBAIM, along with the scientists of the Institute, graced the occasion and encouraged the students to pursue their interest in microbiology, scientific research and innovation.
The celebration provided an interactive platform for students to engage with scientists and gain insights into the fascinating world of microorganisms. It also highlighted the immense potential of microorganisms in addressing contemporary challenges related to agriculture, health, food security and environmental sustainability.
The programme concluded with an emphasis on nurturing scientific interest among young learners and inspiring the next generation to explore microbiology and its applications for societal and sustainable development.
A total of 70 students and 7 faculty members took part in the programme.
