ICAR–NBFGR Celebrates 42 Years of Excellence in Aquatic Genetic Resource Management

ICAR–National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, commemorated its 42nd Foundation Day today with a day-long programme marked by scholarly deliberations, institutional recognitions, stakeholder interactions, and vibrant cultural presentations, highlighting the Bureau’s enduring contributions to aquatic genetic resource management in the country.

The Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) N. Felix, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University, delivered the Foundation Day Lecture and addressed the current challenges and future opportunities in aquatic resource management, with special emphasis on adaptive technologies to enhance sectoral resilience.

The Guest of Honour, Shri N. S. Rahmani, Director, Fisheries Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, appreciated ICAR–NBFGR’s impactful programmes that have strengthened aquatic resource enhancement and supported livelihood frameworks across the state.

The Special Guest, Prof. (Dr.) A. N. Mukhopadhyay, Former Vice Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary research, scientific leadership, and forward-looking strategies for resource conservation in the context of emerging climatic challenges.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Director, ICAR–NBFGR, highlighted the Bureau’s major scientific achievements in aquatic genetic resource management and conservation, and its significant contributions to national biodiversity mandates. She underscored the expanding national and international collaborations of the Institute, its translational research outputs, and its pivotal role in advancing sustainable development in alignment with national priorities.

On the occasion, the Chief Guest and other dignitaries released several institute publications, followed by an Awards Ceremony recognizing outstanding contributions by ICAR–NBFGR staff and collaborators. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed and exchanged between ICAR–NBFGR and TNJFU to strengthen academic and research collaboration.

The celebrations were attended by several eminent dignitaries, including NAAS Fellows. Parallel Foundation Day celebrations were held at ICAR–NBFGR’s PAGR Centre, Kochi, in the presence of the Chief Guest, Dr. N. G. K. Pillai, Former ICAR Emeritus Scientist. As part of the observance, dignitaries participated in a plantation drive under the national campaign “एक पेड़ माँ के नाम.”

In addition, the Bureau organized a Farm Innovators Day at the National Fish Museum-cum-Repository, chaired by Dr. S. D. Singh, Former Assistant Director General (Inland Fisheries), along with other senior officials as co-chairs. The session facilitated meaningful interactions among progressive farmers, FFPO members, and subject-matter experts, along with the distribution of inputs to encourage adoption of innovative and sustainable field practices.

The day concluded with a captivating cultural programme reflecting the collective spirit and camaraderie of the ICAR–NBFGR fraternity. The Foundation Day celebrations reaffirmed ICAR–NBFGR’s steadfast commitment to scientific excellence, stakeholder engagement, and national service in safeguarding and advancing India’s aquatic genetic resources.
