In a significant initiative towards enhancing pulse productivity and strengthening the vision of self-reliance in pulse production, ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nadia organized series of Training-cum-Input Distribution Programme under Cluster Frontline Demonstration (CFLD) Programme on Pulses (Blackgram) as part of the Mission for Aatmanirbharata in Pulses.
The programme focused on the promotion of improved production technologies of blackgram (variety: IPU 26-10) and covered an area of 40 hectares involving 230 farmers from 12 villages across four agricultural blocks, namely Chakdah, Santipur, Nakashipara and Krishnanagar-I of Nadia district.
During the training programmes, participants were sensitized to the importance of adopting scientific, resource-efficient, and climate-resilient production practices to enhance blackgram productivity and profitability. The sessions highlighted the significance of quality seed selection, biofertilizer-based seed treatment for improving nutrient availability, application of pre-emergence herbicides for effective weed management, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) strategies, and foliar application of essential micronutrients during critical crop growth stages, particularly the vegetative and flowering phases, to maximize crop growth and yield potential.
The training also focused on the major insect pests and diseases affecting blackgram cultivation and emphasized the adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches. Farmers were encouraged to undertake regular crop surveillance, adopt preventive management practices, promote biological interventions, and use plant protection measures judiciously to ensure sustainable crop health management.
As part of the CFLD intervention under the Mission for Aatmanirbharata in Pulses, farmers were provided with certified seeds of blackgram variety IPU 26-10, biofertilizers Rhizobum and PSB), pre-emergence herbicides and micronutrient formulations as critical production inputs free of cost. These technological interventions are expected to facilitate the adoption of improved production practices, enhance productivity and improve economic returns for farming communities.
The programme served as an effective platform for capacity building, technology dissemination and empowerment of pulse growers in Nadia district. Through such farmer-centric initiatives, ICAR-NDRI, KVK, Nadia continues to support the national endeavour of achieving pulse self-sufficiency, sustainable agricultural growth and enhanced livelihood security for farmers.
