A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today between the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission, Ministry of Rural Development, and the ICAR–National Meat Research Institute, Hyderabad, at NDCC-II Building, New Delhi. The MoU aims to promote women-led, hygienic, and value-added meat-based enterprises across rural India by leveraging NMRI’s technical expertise and DAY-NRLM’s extensive field network of women’s institutions.
Further, this collaboration envisions empowering rural women to access formal markets and establish sustainable, safe, and profitable meat value chains. The partnership aligns with the vision of ‘Lakhpati Didis’, aiming to transform rural women from micro-entrepreneurs to leaders in sustainable livestock enterprises.

Dr. S.B. Barbuddhe, Director, ICAR-NMRI, emphasized that with the steady rise in meat consumption, the development of meat processing and value-added meat products presents a viable opportunity for increasing rural women’s income and entrepreneurship.
During the signing ceremony, the Additional Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), highlighted that livestock-based livelihoods play a pivotal role in enhancing rural income, with women constituting more than 70% of India’s livestock workforce.
Recognizing this potential, the MoU focuses on formalizing meat value chains, ensuring compliance with food safety standards, and mainstreaming women as entrepreneurs in the evolving livestock economy.
