Diversified agriculture, low-cost innovations and scientific farming practices enhance farm profitability and inspire rural entrepreneurship
Shri Nabanidhi Gogoi, a progressive farmer from Moran Gaon, Teok, in Jorhat district of Assam, has emerged as an inspiring example of agricultural innovation and rural entrepreneurship. By integrating field crops, high-value horticulture, piggery, fisheries, nursery management and other allied activities across approximately 8.45 hectares, he has developed a diversified farming enterprise that demonstrates the potential of integrated farming systems to enhance farm income and resilience.

Horticulture is a key component of his farming enterprise, with ash gourd, diversified vegetables, Bhoot Jolokia, guava and arecanut contributing to farm returns. Ash gourd cultivation alone generates an estimated gross return of ₹6 lakh and a net return of ₹3 lakh. Piggery is another major income-generating activity, with an estimated gross return of ₹14 lakh and a net return of ₹5.5 lakh. By combining multiple agricultural enterprises, Gogoi has reduced dependence on a single source of income while making efficient use of available farm resources.
Low-cost innovations driving farm efficiency
Innovation and resource conservation are central to Gogoi’s farming practices. He has developed low-cost, polythene-lined water-harvesting structures to conserve water for irrigation during dry periods. Solar-powered light traps help manage insect pests, while crop rotation, vermicomposting and the use of biofertilisers support sustainable crop production. He has also adopted economical pig-feeding practices and modified crop-management techniques to reduce establishment costs and improve production efficiency.

His farm is equipped with agricultural machinery, irrigation facilities and solar-powered equipment, supporting the efficient management of diverse farming activities. In 2025–26, he further expanded his enterprise by establishing Krishi Ghar Nursery-cum-Animal Feed Dealer, adding new avenues for income generation.
Diversification strengthens farm profitability
His reported farm records for 2026–27 indicate estimated gross returns of ₹29.85 lakh and net returns of ₹12.75 lakh across the listed enterprises. The contribution of horticulture, livestock and other allied activities highlights the potential of integrated farming to generate multiple income streams, improve resource utilisation and strengthen the economic resilience of farm households.
Inspiring farmers and rural youth
Beyond his own farm, Gogoi has contributed to rural development by encouraging fellow farmers and aspiring entrepreneurs to adopt diversified and science-based farming practices. According to his earlier profile, more than 600 educated unemployed youth in the locality followed his example and took up integrated farming and high-value crops, highlighting the wider influence of his entrepreneurial journey.

He has also collaborated with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jorhat, Assam Agricultural University and other agricultural agencies to facilitate the dissemination of improved agricultural technologies and practices.
His contributions have received recognition from various organisations. These include the State-Level Best Farmer Award at the International Agri Horti Show, Guwahati, in 2022, along with felicitations for his achievements in progressive and organic farming.

Shri Nabanidhi Gogoi’s journey demonstrates how agricultural diversification, practical innovation and scientific farm management can create profitable rural enterprises. His experience offers an encouraging example for farmers and rural youth seeking to enhance farm income, conserve resources and build sustainable livelihoods through integrated farming.
