National Training on Leptospirosis Diagnostics Underway at ICAR-NIVEDI. Bengaluru

10 -14 August 2026, Bengaluru

ICAR–National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics, Bengaluru, is organizing a five-day Hands-on Training Programme on Laboratory Diagnosis of Leptospirosis from 10–14 August 2026, in collaboration with NCDC, Delhi, under the National One Health Programme for Prevention and Control of Zoonotic Diseases (NOHP-PCZ). The programme aims to strengthen diagnostic capacity, intersectoral collaboration and national preparedness for leptospirosis through an integrated One Health approach.

The programme was inaugurated on 10 August by Dr Rakesh Mishra, Director, Tata Institute for Genetics and Society (TIGS), Bengaluru, who emphasized the importance of hands-on training and collaborative approaches for strengthening leptospirosis diagnostics.

Dr Baldev R. Gulati, Director, ICAR-NIVEDI, highlighted the significance of zoonotic diseases and NIVEDI’s diagnostic & training capabilities and role in advancing the One Health approach.

The training covers biosafety, outbreak investigation, culture and isolation, dark-field microscopy, MAT, ELISA, LAT, LFA and real-time PCR, along with case studies on human and animal leptospirosis. A Training Manual on Laboratory Diagnosis of Leptospirosis was released during the inaugural session.

The programme has brought together 27 participants from 13 States/UTs for intensive practical training in laboratory diagnosis, outbreak investigation and preparedness for leptospirosis.
