ICAR-CIBA and Mangrove Foundation of Maharashtra demonstrates Cage farming of Asian Seabass in Brackishwaters of Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra

The ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai in collaboration with the Mangrove Foundation, Government of Maharashtra has implemented the Project on “Brackishwater cage culture with multi-trophic candidate species in diverse rearing systems for alternate communities living near the mangroves”.

The Chief Guest, Dr. K.K Vijayan, Director, ICAR-CIBA outlined the brackishwater cage farming’s scope as a model for producing the healthy food, employment generation and increasing the income of the coastal folks.

Shri N. Vasudevan, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF) and Executive Director, Mangrove Foundation, Government of Maharashtra articulated the cage farming as the first step towards the Blue-Green Revolution in brackishwater. He stated that along with the fish production, the process would help to achieve the livelihood for the coastal folks and protection of Mangrove resources.

Dr. Clement Ben, Chief Conservator of Forests, Kolhapur stressed on the importance of partnership between the research institutions, such as, ICAR-CIBA, State Government agencies and the stakeholders.

The first harvest of the farmed seabass from one of the cages was conducted today at the cage farming site, Malvan, Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. The occasion also held an Interaction Meeting of the Self-Help Groups and the farmers from the region.

The Self-Help Groups formed under the project, undertook the cage farming of the Asian Seabass Fish (Lates calcarifer) using the hatchery produced seeds and formulated the feed (Seabass plus) in the customised cost-effective cages.

About 526 kg of Seabass fish were harvested, each weighing about 500 g was sold to a domestic fish trader during the occasion. A realized sum of Rs. 2 Lakh was handed-over to the beneficiary fishers.
