World Environment Day - 2022 celebrated

5th June, 2022

The “World Environment Day - 2022” is the biggest International Day for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (U.N.E.P.) and held annually on 5th June since 1973, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

Contributing their bit towards ensuring a healthy environment, the ICAR Institutes celebrated the day with full zeal.

 

ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa

The ICAR-CCARI, Goa and ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa in association with Samrat Club, Marcel celebrated the Day at the Government Primary School, Marcel.

The Chief Guest, Shri Shramesh Bhosle, Zila Parishad Member highlighted the importance of the Environment, necessary steps to be taken for its conservation and protection.

The Guest of Honor, Shri Vikas Bhagat, Chairman, Bicholim Taluka Government Primary Teachers’ Society and Smt. Manda Bhagat, Head Mistress, PTA Chairman Applauded the ICAR-KVK, North Goa for their support in organizing the programme.

Shri Rahul M. Kulkarni, Assistant Chief Technical Officer, ICAR-KVK, North Goa, delivered a Talk on “The Importance of Medicinal Plants, Kitchen and Terrace Garden, Conservation of Soil, Importance of Soil Testing, Organic and Integrated Nutrient Management Approach for Profitability and Methods to Improve Soil Health”.

The event registered participation by 35 participants.

 

ICAR-Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune, Maharashtra

The Directorate organized the Guest Lecture on “Ecosystem-based Approach for Harmonizing Agriculture with Nature” by DR. S. Naresh Kumar, Principal Scientist & Professor, Division of Environmental Science, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi.

The Chief Guest, Dr. K.V. Prasad, Director, ICAR-DFR, Pune emphasized underlined the scope for the conservation of pollinator fauna in the urban areas and the farmland. The Directorate’s activities on the conservation of pollinator fauna and the scope of floriculture-based apiculture were also outlined by Dr. Prasad.

The Guest of Honor, Dr. Jyoti Jadhav, Head, Department of Biotechnology, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Maharashtra highlighted the importance of Honeybees and their invaluable services.

Dr. D.M. Firake, Senior Scientist (Entomology), ICAR-DFR, Pune stated about the different adaptations in Honeybees that make them the most efficient pollinators.

Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. D. M. Firake, Senior Scientist (Entomology), ICAR-DFR, Pune highlighted the main objective of celebrating the day.

More than 75 participants attended the programme.

 

ICAR-Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres, Barrackpore, Kolkata

The Chief Guest, Prof. Mohua Das, Vice-Chancellor, West Bengal State University, Kolkata emphasized on calling for greater collaborations with the ICAR-CRIJAF for the students with special focus on Jute and harness the ecological values of the crops further.

The Guest of Honor, Prof. Abhijit Paul, Nehru Fulbright Fellow, University of Berkeley, California emphasized that the natural fibre will play a sustainable role in safeguarding the environment if the benefit from such products is linked to the community development.

Dr. Gouranga Kar, Director, ICAR-CRIJAF, Barrackpore, Kolkata highlighted the replacement of single use plastics with the Jute-based products. Dr. Kar also accentuated on the diversified use of natural fibres in the context of changing climatic conditions.

Dr. Krishna Ray, Assistant Professor, West Bengal State University, Kolkata stressed on the regeneration of the Mangrove forest in the coastal ecosystem that aims at the recovery of degraded and damaged ecosystem.

A total of 200 participants including the Institute’s Scientists, Staff Members and Students participated in the event.

 

ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh

The Institute organized a Lecture by Prof. Ravi Naidu, Director, Global Centre for Environmental Remediation, The University of Newcastle, Australia.

In his Lecture on “Our Polluted Soil - Why we need to stop destroying the very thing that sustains us”, Prof. Naidu emphasized on the importance of soil protection from pollution for the environment’s sustainability. He urged the Institute to join the International Network on Soil Pollution (INSOP) of FAO for strengthening the international efforts of combating the soil pollution.

Dr. A.K. Patra, Director, ICAR-IISS, Bhopal expressed his concerns on the rising pollution that is threatening the existence of the biodiversity. The emerging menace of the micro-plastics that are entering into the precious soil resource through the various means and affecting the soil biological health & ecosystem services were underlined in Dr. Patra’s address.

Welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. J.K. Saha, Head, Division of Environmental Soil Science, ICAR-IISS, Bhopal stressed on the need for lifestyle orientation in harmony with the nature to prevent the degradation of environment.

A total of 57 Scientists participated in the event.

 

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata

The Institute organized a Plantation Programme to celebrate the day.

Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore along with the other Senior Officials of the Institute planted the Plants like Amla (Phyllanthus emblica), Jamun (Syzygium cumini), Sabeda (Manilkara zapota) and Rudrakhsh (Elaeocarpus ganitrus), etc., during the occasion.

The Institute also held an Awareness-cum-Sensitization Programme at Sheoraphuli Ghat, Ganga River, Barrackpore to sensitize the general public about the importance of conserving and protecting the environment.

 

ICAR-Central Inland Agricultural Research Institute, Regional Station, Minicoy

The Scientific Team of ICAR-CIARI, Regional Station, Minicoy organized a “Beach Clean-Up Drive” at Western Side of the Coast along with officials from ALHW in a stretch area of 200 Metres (site to the boundary near to Naval Detachment Unit, Minicoy) to celebrate the day.

The Team Members collected around 12 Bags of litters comprising of abandoned nylon nets, plastic caps, bottles, plastic bags, drums, cans and Styrofoam, etc. They also sensitized the people in the area on good citizen science practices to be followed and spread the message of clean and green India.

The Institute also held a Plantation Drive to mark the celebrations of the day.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Shrikant R. Thapdiya, Deputy Collector, Minicoy, Lakshadweep planted the saplings at the ICAR-CIARI-Regional Station, Minicoy Farm & Indian Army Base, Minicoy Unit, Lakshadweep.
