Shri Shriniwas Patil, Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, inaugurated the 4th Stakeholder Interaction Meeting on Orchids’ at ICAR-National Research Centre for Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim here today.
Hon’ble Governer highlighted importance of floriculture and organic farming for sustainability of livelihood and also stressed that research must take into account the profitability and income generation factor to the farmers. Chief Guest formally launched the ‘National Mission on Himalayan Studies’ (NMHS) and relased three publications of the institute.
The Chief Guest also awarded 16 orchid farmers from Sikkim, Darjeeling, Meghalaya, Assam and Alipuduar.
Prof. K. V. Peter, former Vice-Chancellor of Kerala Agricultural University and Director (IISR) urged for the dedicated efforts towards conservation and sustainable utilization of orchid biodiversity available in India.
Padma Shri Dr. Brahma Singh, former Director (DRDO-Life Sciences) stressed upon focused research on value addition of orchids and its popularization through innovative approaches.
Shri. P. T. Bhutia, Director (Horticulture), HCCD Department briefed on initiatives by Government of Sikkim in promotion of Horticulture in Sikkim.
Dr. D. R. Singh, Director, ICAR-NRCO highlighted the technologies, varieties developed and products developed and also put forward his vision for commericialization of orchids.
Nearly 150 participants from state and central organizations and progressive orchid growers from Sikkim, Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal took part in the meet.
