Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, and Panchayati Raj, Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel, visited the ICAR – National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, today.
During the visit, the Minister chaired a progress review meeting and interacted with the institute’s scientists and officers. Discussions focused on key priority areas, including conservation of fish genetic resources, ongoing advanced research initiatives, integration of modern technologies, and strategies for sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

Prof. Baghel commended the scientific community for their dedicated efforts and emphasised that sustained research and innovation are vital for strengthening the fisheries sector, enhancing the income of fish farmers and allied stakeholders, and contributing to the vision of a self-reliant India.
As part of the visit, the Minister interacted virtually with women trainees from Jharkhand who are currently undergoing training at the College of Fisheries Science, Gumla under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) component of ICAR–NBFGR. He described scientific advancement in fisheries as a critical driver for revitalising the rural economy and generating substantial employment opportunities, particularly in underserved regions.
Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Director, ICAR–NBFGR, delivered a comprehensive presentation highlighting the institute’s major activities, achievements, and future roadmap. The meeting also included detailed deliberations on the emerging challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and its potential long-term implications for fisheries and aquatic health management.

The visit underscored the Government’s continued commitment to strengthening fisheries research, capacity building, and inclusive development to support sustainable growth of the sector and improved livelihoods for fishing communities.
