ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, organised a field workshop on ‘Aqua Eco-Tourism and Awareness of Invasive Fish Species in Goa’ today at the institute, under the ICAR One Team–One Task (OTOT) initiative. The workshop aimed to promote awareness of aqua eco-tourism and highlight the ecological impacts of invasive fish species on Goa’s aquatic ecosystems.

The session included demonstrations of crab-trap designs and their application in crab harvesting, shrimp farming practices, green mussel (Perna viridis) culture techniques, and Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) culture. These demonstrations provided students with practical insights into aquaculture technologies, species-specific culture methods, and the potential of diversified aquatic farming systems to promote sustainable livelihoods and aqua eco-tourism in Goa.

An additional technical session was also conducted on the ecological implications of invasive fish species for native biodiversity and aquatic ecosystem functioning. The session emphasised the importance of systematic surveys of native and non-native fish populations, ecological impact assessments, and ecosystem modelling to predict invasion scenarios.

The potential for value addition from invasive fish biomass was also discussed, wherever ecologically sustainable and legally permissible, as part of integrated invasive species management and aquatic biodiversity conservation.

A total of 24 students and two teachers from Goa University, Taleigao, participated in the programme.
