ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore Takes Khet Bachao Abhiyan to Tripura, Promotes Healthy Soils and Sustainable Fisheries

ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Centre, Guwahati, Assam, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Tripura, organised a Khet Bachao Abhiyan programme at Gandatwisa, Dhalai district, today. The initiative, conducted under the leadership of Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, aimed to promote soil health, climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable fisheries for strengthening rural livelihoods.

The programme sensitised farmers to the importance of soil-test-based fertiliser application, balanced nutrient management and the judicious use of chemical fertilisers in combination with organic manures and biofertilisers. Discussions also covered scientific pond management, recommended fertiliser application for aquaculture, maintenance of water quality and conservation of aquatic ecosystems.

Emphasis was laid on integrating scientific agricultural and fisheries practices to improve productivity, optimise natural resource utilisation and strengthen climate resilience. Dr Pradip Dey highlighted the need to translate scientific advancements into practical, farmer-oriented interventions, stressing balanced nutrient application, reduced dependence on indiscriminate agrochemical use, improved pond management and sustainable production practices. He also underscored their contribution to resilient livelihoods and the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

The programme brought agricultural and fisheries advisories together on a common platform, strengthening farmers' understanding of the linkages between soil health, crop productivity and sustainable aquaculture.

A total of 48 farmers, including 33 male and 15 female participants, attended the programme. The initiative reinforced ICAR-CIFRI's commitment to strengthening farmer–scientist–institutional linkages and promoting environmentally sustainable agriculture and fisheries.
