Sensitization Workshop on ‘Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmer’s Rights Act, 2001’ for nodal officers of KVKs of Rajasthan and Gujarat was inaugurated at ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Jodhpur on 9 March 2017. Dr S. K. Singh, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Jodhpur in his introductory remarks briefed about the biodiversity of the Rajasthan and Gujarat states and scope for the protection of farmers’ traditional varieties through their registration under Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmer’s Rights Act, 2001’. He appealed KVKs for encouraging farmers for registering more varieties under PPV& FRA.
Dr Ravi Prakash, Registrar, Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right’s Authority (PPV&FRA), the Chief guest, explained the Role of PPV&FRA, importance of plant genetic resources, its collection and documentation, overview of PPVFRA, breeders rights and farmers rights, registration of plant varieties and essentially derived varieties, benefits of registration, surrender and revocation of certificate and rectification and correction of register and procedures in PPVRFA. He appreciated the efforts and contribution of the KVKs as partner in promoting and registration of the farmers’ varieties.
