ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KONABAY India Pvt. Ltd. to conduct performance evaluation trials of shrimp seed lines using the Super Intensive Pond-based Natural Shrimp Farming (SIPNSF) system.
Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Lal, Director, ICAR-CIBA, emphasized that the research outcomes will provide shrimp farmers with the option to select seed lines suited to their specific requirements.
KONABAY India Pvt. Ltd., managed by Kona Bay—a subsidiary of Hendrix Genetics—brings global expertise in shrimp breeding. Hendrix Genetics, a worldwide leader in multi-species breeding and genetics, has established a Shrimp Breeding Multiplication Centre (BMC) in Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh, through a strategic joint venture with Sapthagiri Hatcheries. The Indian BMC is aimed at addressing the growing demand for high-quality shrimp genetics in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sunkaranam Hari Narayana Rao, Technical and Sales Manager, KONABAY, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, noting that the results will directly benefit the shrimp farming community. He also elaborated on the company’s initiatives in developing diverse seed lines and expressed enthusiasm about partnering with CIBA to evaluate their performance under field conditions.
Dr. Kumaraguru Vasagam outlined the background of the MoU and shared significant early insights from the ongoing research trials. The event was attended by Heads of Divisions and scientists from CIBA’s Nutrition, Genetics and Biotechnology Division.
