ICAR–DARE Explores Collaboration with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

A high-level meeting was held between Dr. M.L. Jat, Secretary (DARE) & Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and Dr. Simeon Ehui, Director General, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). The meeting aimed to explore avenues for agricultural research collaboration and the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions.

Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), Dr DK Yadav, Deputy Director General (Crop Science), Dr AK Nayak, Deputy Director General (Natural Resource Management), Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticultural Science) also graced the occasion.

ICAR–DARE Explores Collaboration with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

IITA, a non-profit institution, is dedicated to generating agricultural innovations to address Africa’s pressing challenges of hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and natural resource degradation. Its research priorities include:

•    Strengthening seed systems and sustainable agro-input supply
•    Supporting national agricultural research and extension systems
•    Scaling innovations through public–private partnerships
•    Engaging youth and promoting gender equity in agriculture
•    Developing improved crop varieties, agronomy, and crop protection measures
•    Promoting sustainable intensification and diversification
•    Linking farmers to markets, mechanization, post-harvest management, and processing
•    Advancing safe and nutritious food systems

ICAR–DARE Explores Collaboration with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Under its current Agri-Food System programs, IITA is actively engaged in research on ‘Dryland cereals and legumes systems’, ‘Maize agri-food systems’, ‘Roots, tubers, and bananas agri-food systems’.

The discussions underscored the shared commitment of ICAR and IITA to advancing agricultural innovation and fostering partnerships that contribute to global food security and sustainable farming practices.
