ICAR-National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics, Bengaluru, celebrated its 26th Foundation Day on its campus in presence of dignitaries / in charge Directors of ICAR institutes in the region. The event was flagged off by hoisting a flag by the Director and dignitaries followed by plating of sapling by the Chief guests; Dr Narendra Kumar, IRS (Retd), Former Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), Karnataka and Goa; Dr. Vivek Kapur, Professor of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, College of Agricultural Sciences, Penn State University, USA; and Guest of honour; Dr. D. Hemadri, Assistant Director General (Animal Health), ICAR.
On the occasion, Director’s presentation highlighted the salient achievements of institute made in the past and contributions of scientists & staff to elevate the institute to international standard and leading the nation’s livestock disease intelligence with a clear road map to achieve disease free status for endemic diseases like FMD, PPR, Brucellosis and CSF. The institute’s global reference labs (WoAH Referral labs on PPR and Leptospirosis) and Disease informatics are contributing significantly for early warning, risk map, and sentinel surveillance. Further, Incharge PME cell showcased the glimpses of ongoing current activities and future focus in R&D under diverse domains including epidemiology, economics, diagnostics and disease informatics.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vivek Kapur, delivered a foundation day lecture on ‘“From Burden to Freedom: NIVEDI and the New Science of Animal Health in India” by recognizing the achievements of ICAR-NIVEDI in eradication of Rinder Pest (RP) to efforts being made to tackle current day challenges with pragmatic approaches with advanced tools like genome-based surveillance and development of new strategy to achieve and maintain disease free status.
Dr. Narendra Kumar, addressed the staff and highlighted the diverse animal wealth of India and efforts made by the veterinarians and research institutes in safeguarding health of animals. Further, he emphasised the need for protecting and promoting indigenous breeds of animals as well as efforts to enhance their productivity.
Dr. D. Hemadri, highlighted the transformational change and commendable contribution made by the institute in among animal health institutes under the SMD particularly among small instiute’s category is noteworthy with notable number of external funded projects and scientific contributions /policy guidelines being provided to the nation on regular basis.

The occasion also included Scientists-farmers interaction, discussion on livestock health issues and advisory services. Livestock Farming necessary items were distributed to selected dairy farmers on the occasion. Best livestock farmers were also felicitated by the dignitaries. On the day, institute also felicitated and appreciated the best preforming staffs in the category of Scientists, Administration, research scholars, and contractual staff who made their outstanding efforts to excel and contributed for institute’s growth journey. Several publications of institute such as Annual Report and monthly News letter were also released on the day.
