Mechanised Feed Solutions and Livestock Diversification Key to Boosting Milk Production: Dr M. L. Jat
The ICAR Workshop on Strategic Assessment of Feed Resources for Increased Livestock Production was organised in New Delhi today. The programme was graced by Dr M. L. Jat, Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR) who highlighted the critical challenges confronting India’s livestock sector, particularly the declining and seasonal availability of green fodder.
Dr Jat emphasized that the reduced and fluctuating supply of green fodder is adversely impacting milk production, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive and forward-looking interventions. He stressed that mechanisation across feed and fodder systems, along with improved resource planning, is essential to ensure consistent availability and efficiency in livestock nutrition.
“Strengthening livestock-based diversification will play a pivotal role in enhancing productivity and ensuring that the livestock sector makes an impactful contribution to the vision of Viksit Bharat,” he added.
Dr D.K. Yadav, Deputy Director General, (Crop Science) ICAR, emphasized that a coordinated national effort involving all animal husbandry departments is crucial to align feed and fodder availability with the present livestock census and strengthen sustainable livestock productivity.
Dr Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR, highlighted the major challenges in feed and fodder production for livestock and discussed potential strategies to overcome them.
The workshop brought together experts, researchers, and policymakers to deliberate on strategies for optimizing feed resources, improving fodder management, and promoting sustainable livestock production systems aligned with national development goals.
