“1+1 Should Not Be 2, It Should Be 11”: Dr. M. L. Jat Reinforces India–Australia Research Partnership

Reaffirming the growing momentum in Indo-Australian scientific cooperation, Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR), visited Western Sydney University (WSU) today, accompanied by Deputy Director Generals Dr. Rajbir Singh and Dr. A. K. Nayak. The delegation participated in the Australia India Water Centre (AIWC) Symposium 2025 and signed Annexure IX of the ICAR–WSU Work Plan (2024–2029), cementing the next phase of collaboration.

Addressing the AIWC Symposium, Dr. Jat emphasized that partnerships should create exponential impact, remarking that ‘1+1 should not be 2, it should be 11. He highlighted the critical role of Indo-Australian cooperation in shaping sustainable water futures, groundwater management, climate resilience, and capacity building. He also commended initiatives such as MARVI, the Young Water Professional Program, Dam Safety Training, and the proposed Joint Master’s Program, calling for deeper engagement of ICAR institutes in water-focused research.

Dr. Jat also highlighted new opportunities for collaboration linking agriculture with medicinal plant and medical research, following his visit to the NICM Health Research Institute. He encouraged greater two-way capacity building and increased participation of Australian researchers in ICAR institutions.

In discussions with Prof. George Williams, Vice-Chancellor, WSU and senior leadership, the two sides reviewed significant outcomes achieved so far, including dual-degree programs, collaborative projects, and expanded mobility initiatives.

The signing of Annexure IX signals renewed commitment to joint research, capacity development, micro-credential programs, vocational training, and enhanced student–faculty exchange.

The event was attended by the Consul General of India in Sydney, Dr. S. Janakiraman, along with senior representatives from NABARD.

The ICAR–WSU partnership has delivered notable progress, with 58 dual-degree students enrolled over the past three years and extensive training programs under NAHEP supporting students and scientists from State Agricultural Universities. WSU’s forthcoming India Campus is expected to further strengthen joint research, education, and skills development.

The visit concluded with both institutions reaffirming their shared commitment to accelerating Indo-Australian cooperation in agricultural innovation, water sustainability, and human resource development.
