The ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Kochi conducted a public demonstration programme on “Fish waste conversion to poultry and fish feed” - An initiative under Swachhata Action Plan at Cochin Fisheries harbour in Ernakulam, Kerala today.
The programme was organized under special sanction from Council for implementing the "Management and commercial utilization of waste in 20 fish markets (10/Year) in urban locations".
In his inaugural deliberation, the Chief Guest, Shri K.K. Kunjachan, Councilor, Kochi Nagara Sabha stressed on having a prompt action for waste disposal. He also lauded ICAR-CIFT’s efforts for the initiative in demonstrating an appropriate technology for fish waste utilization as piling up fish waste in markets and landing centre is a big menace for want of suitable disposal mechanism.
In his address, Dr. C.N. Ravishankar, Director, ICAR-CIFT elaborated the ICAR-CIFT’s technology interventions in fishing and fish processing industries and underlined the technology developed for fish waste utilization. He also assured that the support by Agri-Business Incubation (ABI) Centre of ICAR-CIFT for any business venture on ‘fish waste utilization for feed making’.
Shri Sudhir, Administrator & Chief Engineer, Cochin Fisheries Harbour applauded the ICAR-CIFT’s novel technology of fish waste utilization. He also ensured to explore the possibilities for establishing a full-proof waste management system at the Fisheries harbour with ICAR-CIFT’s technical support.
Later, a demonstration on “Conversion of fish waste to feed” in the harbor complex was also conducted by Dr. Zynudheen A.A., Principal Scientist & I/c QAM Division and Dr. Binsi P.K., Scientist. They explained the details of technology and briefed about its implementation implemented at a larger scale in the fish markets and harbours.
The public representatives - Shri Noushad, President and Shri Majeed, Secretary, Harbour Management Committee along with Dr. Saju, Joint Director (Fisheries), Kerala; Smt. Daisy, Manager, MAYSYAFED graced the occasion.
It was envisaged to cover 20 fish markets/fish landing centres located in 6 states namely; Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat along with 2 markets at Delhi during the occasion.
