The ICAR-Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur bagged the prestigious “Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award” for the Year - 2017 for the Large Institute Category today.

Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & DG (ICAR) conferred the Award including Plaque, Citation and Certificate during an event organized at the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, New Delhi.
Dr. Praveen Kumar, Head of the Division received the Award on the behalf of the Institute.
In his address, Dr. Mohapatra remarked the ICAR-CAZRI, Jodhpur as a unique and premier Institute of the world, conducting the multi-disciplinary research for seeking the solutions to the problems of arid region that is occupying about 12% geographical area of the country. He said that the institute has worked with dedication to enhance the farming community’s sustainability and livelihood security by undertaking a wide spectrum of research and development activities in an integrated manner under the fragile conditions of natural resources.
Dr. Mohapatra said that the Institute has designed and developed first model of Agri-Photo-Voltaic System (AVS) in the country that involves the undertaking of electricity generation, crop production and rainwater harvesting from a single land unit in order to enhance the land productivity. He stated that the new varieties of grasses and horticultural crops with the higher productivity potential have been developed to provide a greater choice to the farmers and for achieving the higher income and greater resilience to the climatic stresses.
The Director General said that the additional avenues of the income like gum induction from existing trees at farmers’ fields, utilization of pods of invasive Prosopis juliflora in the development of animal feed blocks have improved the livelihood of large number of farmers in the arid regions.
Dr. Mohapatra underlined that the winning of such recognition in the Diamond Jubilee Year of its establishment, has made this Award very special for the Institute. He said that the contributions of CAZRI in the sand-dune stabilization, shelterbelt plantation, development of integrated farming systems, novel techniques in water harvesting, conservation of genetic resources of the region, livestock management, arid horticulture and the development of new crops cultivars for the drought-prone areas are now globally recognized.
