Dr. Rajeev Ranjan, I.A.S. inaugurates the ICAR-CIBA Digital Conference on “New-age technologies for sustainable Brackishwater Aquaculture”

CIBACDC2.jpgThe ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai organized a Digital Conference (CDC - 2) on “New-age technologies for sustainable Brackishwater Aquaculture” to mark the celebrations of the 92nd ICAR Foundation Day today.

In his inaugural address, Dr. Rajeev Ranjan, I.A.S., Secretary (Fisheries), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India apprised the participants about the Indian aquaculture sector’s immense potential, especially, the Brackishwater Aquaculture sector. The Secretary cited that the Indian aquaculture sector is at the forefront as a global leader, through its significant contribution in terms of export income, nutritional security, employment generation, economic profitability, and new opportunities for innovative enterprises. He articulated that the Government of India wanted to drive the sectoral growth through the recently declared scheme- “Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)”, with a comprehensive reach to all the components of the sector, where the promotion of start-ups and technology development ecosystem has a special thrust.

Dr. Farshad Shishehchian, Group President & CEO, Blue Aqua Group, Singapore highlighted the new generation cutting edge technologies presently being operated in Singapore’s shrimp farming systems. He also outlined the development of multi-species super intensive zero waste smart farms.

Dr. Krishnakumar Menon, Mariculture Expert, Department Presidential Affairs, U.A.E. highlighted the challenges and opportunities in aquaculture in the Middle East, especially, the U.A.E. He briefed about the aquaculture activities of the Aquaculture and Marine Studies Centre (AMSC), Abu Dhabi and their efforts to enhance the production through modern technologies and infrastructure.

Briefing about the selective breeding in aquaculture, Dr. Ram Bangera, Senior Geneticist, Akvaforsk Genetics, Benchmark Genetics, Norway highlighted the requirement of genetic improvement programme targeting the important traits involved in production and health.

Earlier, Dr. K.K. Vijayan, Director, ICAR-CIBA, Chennai highlighted the research and development role of the Institute and the impact of novel technologies developed by the Institute in species diversification, feed biotechnology, health management and genomics front. Dr. Vijayan also stressed on the need of credit and insurance support for the small and medium farmers.

A total of 3,580 participants registered their participation in the conference.
