Brainstorming Session on “Bio-herbicides: Present status and way forward” organized

The ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh organized a Brainstorming Session on “Bio-herbicides: Present status and way forward” today.

In his inaugural address, the Chief Guest, Dr. Suresh Kumar Chaudhari, Deputy Director General (Natural Resource Management), ICAR emphasized on the importance of Bio-herbicides or natural products for the weed management. Regarding the Weeds as one of the major biotic stresses in sustaining the productivity of crops in general and organic agriculture in particular, Dr. Chaudhari stated that to cope with the rising demand from consumers, the farmers are shifting from the harmful chemical-dependent conventional agriculture to more sustainable and greener farm practices.

Highlighting the importance of Organic Farming, the Guest of Honour, Dr. S. Bhaskar, ADG (A, AF&CC), ICAR outlined that with the increase of area under the organic agriculture, the Government has initiated a number of programmes like Paramragat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), Bhartiya Prakritik Krishi Padhati (BPKP) and Network Project on Organic Farming, etc., for promoting the Organic Agriculture.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. J.S. Mishra, Director, ICAR-DWR, Jabalpur underlined the current status of Bio-herbicides and natural products developed and commercialized globally for the weed management.

More than 100 participants including the Eminent Weed Scientists; Directors of Agriculture, Government of Tamil Nadu and Representatives from Bio-pesticide Industries participated in the Brainstorming Session.
