The ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala organized an International Webinar on “Harnessing the Potential of Tropical Tuber Crops under Changing Climate (HPTTC) - 2020” today.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Anand Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticultural Science), ICAR emphasized on the Tropical Tuber Crops’ role in mitigating the climate change consequences. He also stressed on conserving the natural resources and sustainability in view of the climate change.
The Special Guest, Dr. Vikramaditya Pandey, Assistant Director General (Horticultural Science), ICAR highlighted the Tropical Tuber Crops’ significance.
Dr. V. Ravi, Director, ICAR-CTCRI and the Chairman, HPTTC - 2020 briefed about the technical sessions during the Webinar.
In her Lead Talk, Dr. Jan W. Low, World Food Prize Laureate & Principal Scientist, International Potato Centre, CIP, Nairobi Centre, Kenya stressed on calibre of climate-resilient orange-fleshed sweet potato in combating the hidden hunger and malnutrition, thereby, uplifting the socio-economic status of the people of Sub-Saharan African regions.
In her Lecture, Dr. Amele Asrat, Yam Breeder, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Nigeria accentuated on identification of the yield enhancing traits in Yams and approaches to diffuse the same in the breeding programmes.
Dr. Imran Malik, Cassava Production Systems Specialist, Asia Regional Office, International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Vientiane Centre, Lao PDR pinpointed the agronomy and management strategies for the enhancement of cassava productivity and profitability under variable climatic scenarios.
Dr. Joy G. Adiele, Systems Agronomist, National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Abia, Nigeria, discussed Modelling Nutrient Demand and Uptake in LINTUL-Cassava-NPK.
Dr. M.N. Sheela, Head, Division of Crop Improvement, ICAR-CTCRI, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala briefed about the achievements of Crop Improvement Programmes and breeding strategies on the Tropical Tuber Crops.
Earlier, Dr. G. Byju, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CTCRI, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and Convener, HPTTC - 2020 delivered the welcome address.
The Webinar was aimed at having an insight into the Tropical Tuber Crops’ role as food security crops under the variable climates.
A total of 958 participants, 890 from India and 68 from 21 different countries, viz, Australia, Nepal, Cambodia, Nigeria, Colombia, Philippines, Ethiopia, Poland, Fiji, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Tanzania, Indonesia, Thailand, Kenya, Uganda, Liberia, United Kingdom, Morocco, U.S.A. and Mozambique registered for the event and more than 300 delegates and participants virtually participated in the Webinar.
