ICAR-NDRI celebrates its 99th Foundation Day

“The Institute's economic and social impacts in terms of research outputs, technologies developed & commercialised and human resources developed & trained in dairying should be documented”, said Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR). Dr. Mohapatra was addressing the 99th Foundation Day celebrations of the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana held today.

The Director General emphasized on having interface meetings with the Dairy Entrepreneurs, Gaushalas, Officials from the State Departments of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services and Dairy Industry Personnel on a regular basis. This would help in framing the Industry-Institute Partnership Research Projects to address the key issues faced by the dairy sector of the country. Dr. Mohapatra stressed on the framing of effective breeding policy for bovines, especially for indigenous cattle in order to improve their productivity and a robust policy framework on stray cattle management. The DG urged the scientists to take-up the basic research for delineating the presence of bioactive peptides and other nutraceuticals in the milk of various indigenous breeds of cattle.

Dr. Mohapatra emphasized on developing a policy framework for improving the dairy sector taking into account the other dairy animals, viz., Goat, Yak, Mithun and Camel, etc., besides, cattle and buffalo. The need for increasing the handholding of upstream reproductive technologies namely - ETT, IVF, OPU and Animal Cloning, etc., in the country was also accentuated by the Director General.

The Guest of Honor, Dr. Bhupendra Nath Tripathi, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR urged the scientists for working on precision dairy farming and towards boosting the exports of dairy products. Dr. Tripathi also stressed on the need for attracting the youths for dairying.

Dr. M.S. Chauhan, Director & Vice-Chancellor, ICAR-NDRI, Karnal, Haryana presided over the function.

Earlier, Dr. K.P. Ramesha, Head, SRS of ICAR-NDRI, Bengaluru & President, Alumni Association, SRS of ICAR-NDRI briefed about the salient achievements of the SRS of ICAR-NDRI, Bengaluru since its inception.

Around 300 participants virtually participated in the event.
