The ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Ludhiana, Punjab organized two-day “Virtual Annual Zonal Workshop for 69 KVKs of ICAR-ATARI, Ludhiana comprising Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand states and Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Union Territories” from 6th to 7th July, 2020.

In his inaugural address, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) applauded the Krishi Vigyan Kendras’ role in communicating the advisories, innovative agri-solutions in local languages to the farmers during the COVID-19. Dr. Mohapatra emphasized on the significant reduction of the fire incidents with the KVKs’ efforts. The Director General stressed on achieving the target of doubling the farmers’ income in Punjab only through the diversification into fishery, piggery, poultry, mushroom cultivation, apiculture and marketing skills. He also hoped that under the “One District One Commodity”, the region can become a leader to supply goods not only to the entire country; but, to the international markets too.
Stressing on the functioning of the KVKs in the Zone - 1, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), ICAR highlighted the achievements during the previous years. He also appreciated the outcome of the Crop Residue Management activities in the Zone along with providing the farmers with the digital contents during the lockdown.
Dr. Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab stressed highlighted the leading role being played by the KVKs in the field of agricultural extension in addition to their mandated activities. Dr. Singh accentuated the benefits provided by the Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) Technology to the shortage of manpower during the outbreak of COVID-19.
Dr. Tej Partap, Vice-Chancellor, Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand highlighted the significance of success stories published by the ICAR-ATARI, Ludhiana for promoting the culture of agri-innovations in India. He also emphasized on the FPOs’ role for the entrepreneurship development through the KVKs. Dr. Partap urged the KVKs to focus on producing the new age farmers.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. Rajbir Singh, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Ludhiana, Punjab presented the achievements of the Zone - I for the Year - 2019-20.
The Vice-Chancellors of the various State Agricultural Universities provided the innovative ideas for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the KVKs amid COVID-19.
The Heads of KVKs also presented the achievements for the Year - 2019-20 and Action Plan for the Year - 2020-21 during the Technical Sessions.
Dr. V.P. Chahal, ADG (Agricultural Extension), ICAR presented the formal vote of thanks.
More than 150 senior officials of ICAR Institutes participated in the Webinar.
