An FAO-ICAR joint collaborative meeting for National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance was held here today.
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE and DG. ICAR, in his presidential address said that antimicrobial or antibiotic resistance is a multi-sectoral global threat affecting human and animal health, food safety, plants, fisheries and the environment as a whole. He stressed that the National Action Plan for antimicrobial resistance should cover mainly four issues, awareness, advisories/policy guidelines, sustainability of production system and also carry out research to understand the genetic mechanisms
The meeting was coordinated by Dr. H. Rahman, DDG (Animal Science) and Dr. J. K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries Science).
Dr. J. K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries Science) gave an overview of Indian aquaculture sector including need for future plans on AMR.
Dr. Shyam Khadka, FAO Representative in India presented an overview of antimicrobial resistance particularly with respect to human medicines.
Dr. Rajesh Bhatia and Dr. Upadhyay, from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Dr. (Mrs) Sara from the United State Agency for International Development (USAID), Dr. Sunil Gupta, Additional Director, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. H. Rahman, DDG (Animal Science), Dr. Ashok Kumar, ADG (Animal Health), Dr. Sudhir Raizada, ADG (Inland Fisheries), Dr. P. Pravin ADG (Marine Fisheries), Dr. Amit Khurana and Dr. Rajeshwari Sinha from Centre for Science and Environment and experts from the ICAR Fisheries Research Institutes attended the meeting.
