107th Foundation Day of ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute celebrated

30th October, 2018, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

The ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore celebrated its 107th Foundation day here today.

Dr. Anand Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Crop Science) / Additional Charge, in his foundation day lecture,  lauded the role of ICAR-SBI in making India a sugar-surplus nation and also emphasized on the need to adopt the cost cutting measures for sugarcane production that can be beneficial for the farmers of the nation.

The programme witnessed the felicitations ceremony presided over by Dr. K. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Dr. K. Mohan Naidu, Former Director, ICAR-SBI and Dr. N. Vijayan Nair, Former Director, ICAR-SBI.

Dr. G. Hemaprabha, Principal Scientist, ICAR-SBI was conferred with Sir T.S. Venkatraman award for outstanding research in Sugarcane Agriculture and Dr. K. Bagyalakshmi for the best PhD thesis.

Shri P. Natarajan, a participant of ICAR-SBI’s Participatory Seed Production Programme was also honored for achieving  an average yield of around 40 tonnes/ acre as seed material.

Earlier, Dr. Bakshi Ram, Director, ICAR-SBI, gave an overview of the Institute’s achievements since its establishment in 1912.
