Observing the World Fisheries Day on 21ST November - 2018, as declared by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute organized World Fisheries Day - 2018 celebrations here today.
Shri Pradeep Bagela, Vice Chairman of Nehru Yuva Kendra, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Government of India marked his presence as the Chief Guest of the programme. He urged the fishermen and rural youth for taking up fish farming a career and entrepreneurial activity in the near future.
The programme witnessed the opening ceremony observing the releasing of 1.5 lakhs of fish seeds of Indian major carp in the river Ganga by the special guests, Dr. B.K. Das, Director, CIFRI and Ms. Madhvi Agarwal, Governing Body Member of Nehru Yuva Kendra Organization in continuation following the ranching programme under the “Namami Gange” project of the Government of India.
The aim of the programme was to create awareness among the fishermen about the new technologies that can be adopted for earning better livelihoods. The fishermen present during the event were also made available with an interaction session with the Director of the Institute and the special guests that helped them to understand about the various factors related to fish conservation and also the nutritional value of Small Indigenous Fisheries.
A total of 130 fishers from Sunderban, North 24 Paraganas, Howrah and Mayurbhanj district of Odisha participated in the event.
On the occasion of “Cooperative Week”, the institute also started a special discussion session from 14TH November - 2018 that marked the participation by fishermen from the “Akaipur Darbasini Fishermen’s Society” and “Hingalgunj Agricultural society”.
