ICAR-CCARI, Goa Scientists visit “Fani” Cyclone-affected areas of Odisha

Dr. Eaknath Bhanudasrao Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Old Goa along with his team of scientists visited the Cyclone “Fani” affected areas of Puri and Khordha Districts of Odisha State from 29th May to 12th June, 2019.

The team of scientists comprised of different disciplines - crop sciences, natural resource management, horticulture and animal sciences, etc.

The Director visited ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar; Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khordha and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Puri; Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology and Central Avian Research Institute, Bhubaneswar and ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack. Dr. Chakurkar took a note about the damage caused by the cyclone to the agriculture, livestock and fisheries. He also discussed about the plan for organizing the animal health camps, development of collaboration, sharing of planting material, etc.; for overcoming the damage caused.

In order to assess the effect of the Cyclone “Fani”, the team organized around 10 animal health camps in about 15 villages. Around 1,700 animals including the cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, poultry and dogs were treated for the various ailments.

 With an aim to facilitate the farmers with the quick returns, the seeds of improved varieties of vegetables namely okra, gourds, tomato, chili, etc., were provided to them.

The damage to the windbreaks of casuarina - native vegetation and mixed casuarina - native vegetation were noted nearby the sea shore areas of Puri.

The Senior Officials of the State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Departments and KVKs were present on the occasion.
