ICAR-IISWC joins IIT, Delhi Alumni Association to sensitize on biodiversity conservation

iissw-01-20072020.jpgThe ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Dehradun joined the IIT, Delhi Alumni Association (IITDAA) Dehradun Chapter in sensitizing the participants in the Webinar on “Biodiversity Conservation in the Himalayas: Challenges & Way Forward” organized during the occasion of monsoon festival, Harela celebrated in Uttarakhand today.

In his welcome address, Shri Ravindra Kumar, President, IITDAA highlighted the importance of biodiversity, the participation of local people in conservation of biodiversity and the religious significance of Harela in greening the area for prosperity. Shri Kumar stressed on the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for each one planting at least one tree.

Ms. Jyotsna Bareja, Secretary, IITDAA underlined the simple means and ways of biodiversity conservation. She emphasized on the IITDAA's commitment to undertake activities in future for conserving biodiversity.

Dr. Geetanjali Kaushik, Joint Secretary, IITDAA briefed about the green festival, Harela that signifies the greening, prosperity and health of people and the environment.

Dr. Dipankar Saha, Former Additional Director, CPCB, Expert Member, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India outlined the historical account of biodiversity and management in terms of status and increasing concerns of conservation. He also stressed on the fundamental duty of the society to protect biodiversity.

Dr. Kaushal Kumar, Head Department of Forest Products & Utilization, Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi highlighted the significance of forest minor products in healthcare and medicinal products. He emphasized on the potential of giloy for various medications and uses.

Dr. M. Muruganandam, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun underlined the various challenges being faced by the Himalayan biodiversity, associated ecosystem services in the wake of accruing developmental and anthropogenic influences. He also discussed possible ways for conserving biodiversity and natural resources.

Over 80 participants from across the country besides, Nepal deliberated in the Webinar.
