The ICAR-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasaragod, Kerala organized the “Virtual 29th Annual Group Meeting of ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project on Palms” from 10th to 11th August, 2020.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Anand Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticultural Science), ICAR outlined the overall growth of the horticultural sector and its significant contribution to the GDP and nutritional security of the nation with special emphasis on oil palm. Dr. Singh emphasized on exploring the carbon sequestration potential of palms to take the research forward in the era of climatic vagaries. He also underlined the need to develop the high yielding varieties, user friendly technologies. He portrayed that the adoption of remunerative location-specific intercrops and integration of animal enterprises in the coconut ecosystem through IFS approaches can help the farmers to realize better income than sole cropping.
The Guest of Honor, Dr. B.K. Pandey, ADG (Horticultural Science), ICAR stressed on tailoring all the research programmes of ICAR-AICRP on Palms to go in tandem with the present extraordinary situation.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Dr. Anitha Karun, Director, ICAR-CPCRI, Kasaragod, Kerala applauded the Deputy Director General’s positive concern over the palm scientists’ health across the nation.
The crops experts also provided their valuable suggestions / recommendations for the further improvement of the efficacy of the ICAR-AICRP on Palms.
During the meeting, three technologies were recommended for release to the farming community.
A total of 70 participants participated in the Virtual Meeting.
