Brainstorming Session on “Utilization of Wastewaters in Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture”

The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi virtually organized a Brainstorming Session on “Utilization of Wastewaters in Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture” today.

In his address, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) stressed on the prevalence of the problem of water scarcity at one hand and generation of about 61,754 million litres of sewage water per day which is not utilized economically.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. S.K. Chaudhari, Deputy Director General (Natural Resource Management), ICAR accentuated on linking the important Government Schemes like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Developing Smart Cities with the programme. He also stressed on the need for developing quality standards for different uses of waste waters; guidelines and critical limits of heavy metals in water; classification of wastewaters for different uses like forestry, aqua-culture, livestock development, cultivation of fruits and vegetables, etc.

Earlier, Dr. J.C. Dagar, Former ADG (ICAR) and Convener of the Session emphasized on judicial use of water in innovative horticulture, agroforestry, development of lawns, gardens, green-belts, landscapes, vertical farming, dairy and poultry units in peri-urban areas, roof-top cultivation, cultivation of aromatic and ornamental plants and aqua-culture by developing low-cost technologies, etc.

In his welcome address, Dr. A.K. Singh, Secretary, NAAS, New Delhi & Former Vice-Chancellor, Rajmata Scindia Agricultural University, Gwalior briefed about the main objectives of the Brainstorming Session.

The renowned Scientists, Directors, Administrators and Policy Makers from different Institutes and Universities virtually participated in the discussion.
