The ICAR-Indian Institute of Soybean Research, Indore, Madhya Pradesh organized a Webinar on “Plant Variety Protection Intricacies and impact on Trait Development” today.

In his address, the Chief Guest, Dr. R.R. Hanchinal, Former Chairman, PPV&FR Authority & Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Karnataka stressed on the need for protecting the farmers’ rights. He also emphasized on recognizing the farmers with rewards to acknowledge their contributions in conserving the local varieties. The eligibility of the farmers' varieties and their exemption from the payment of any fees in any proceedings under the Act was highlighted by Dr. Hanchinal. The Chief Guest underlined the various provisions and advantages of the Act during the occasion.

Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. Nita Khandekar, Director, ICAR-IISR, Indore underlined the Scientists’ and farmers’ interests in exploring the various aspects of PPV&FR Act.

The Webinar was aimed at encouraging the farmers and scientists from the various Universities and Research Institutes to register any new or extant plant varieties under the PPV&FR Act, 2001, in order to safeguard the Intellectual Property Rights.

More than 100 participants from the different State Agricultural Universities and ICAR Institutes participated in the Webinar.
